Bonhams FLASHBACK:
2nd September 1993 Entertainment sale

I came across this vintage Bonhams catalogue dating from 1993.

In my research into sales of Doctor Who costumes and memorabilia at historical Bonhams auctions, I don’t think I’ve seen quite so many Who-related items in a general sale before - 75 items in total, most of which are costume.

Catalogues in those days were sparsely written, often containing typing errors and misattributions. Hence you will see Sontarin (not Sontaran) and Androzanni (instead of Androzani).
Other instances cite the wrong episode titles; wrong seasons; and occasional wrong aliens!

I have therefore NOT attempted to correct any of these as it is not always possible to fathom the ambiguous nature of some of the listings.

Where possible I have used the (few) photos from the catalogue to illustrate the items, but most I have sourced images from either episodes cited, or later Bonhams auctions where it would appear these items resurfaced for sale.
As usual I have separated the items by Doctor era, and you can see the rest of the items here:

Bonhams FLASHBACK: -
24th August 1992 Entertainment Sale

Last week I showed you the content of a Bonhams sale from January 1992. In it a large number of ex-BBC Costume Dept outfits from Doctor Who were sold off.

Since then I have found another catalogue from 1992, this time from August.

Interestingly a number of the extensive Doctor Who items sound very much like those sold back in January, though with much higher estimates this time around.

More recently I think we have seen some of these lots continuing to be sold on. It’s fascinating to trace the items back through the various auction catalogues, following the prices they sell for.

As usual I have separated the items by Doctor era, and you can see the rest of the items here:

Bonhams FLASHBACK:
23rd June 2010 Entertainment Memorabilia

When I was at the last Bonhams auction, one of the auctioneers made mention of a further sale in June, where Doctor Who items would be available.

I think I was expecting another full-on sale of ex-BBC items, but what it appears to be is a general Memorabilia sale, with a hand full of Who related lots.

There are seventeen items in total, and you need to real carefully what they are. The repeated use of the phrase “built for exhibition purposes” is a bit disappointing.

I’ll go to the viewing, but I can’t see myself bidding on anything.

As usual I have separated the items by Doctor era, and you can see the rest of the items here:
Here are just the lots relating to the First Doctor era
Lot No: 126
Part believed to be from Dr. Who And The Daleks, 1964 and The Chase, 1965
A Dalek, with back section removed to reveal interior, of wood, plastic and metal, the skirt section heavily overpainted in grey, with blue hemispheres, with quilted fabric to removed rear section edges, the shoulder, neck and dome sections created for exhibition purposes, plunger missing, slats of plastic with impressed foam between, height approximately 64 inches

Estimate: £2,000 - 3,000
Sold for £4,800

Footnote:
It is believed that the skirt section of this lot is the oldest surviving screen used Dalek prop.
Thought to have been acquired by the BBC from the film company Aura after completion of 'Dr. Who And The Daleks', the Dalek was then used during the 1965 William Hartnell era story 'The Chase'. Subsequently, the piece was altered for exhibition purposes, including the removal of the back section.
